KeikoKen Kambingan, General Santos City
Part 3 of a series.
We arrived in Gensan a day earlier than the opening day of the SOCCSKSARGEN Experience Tour 2012 so we were supposedly on our own, but Kuya Avel wants to spoil us with his pampering, LOL. He introduced us to our driver for the next few days, Kuya Nonoy. From Family Country Hotel, our official S-Ex Tour van brought us to an interesting hole-in-the-wall eatery.
Say hello toKeikoKen Kambingan! The place looks like a typical carinderia but then, it serves goat dishes, ONLY. Oh wait, well, there’s actually Tinolang Native Chicken for those who are not into goat-ing.
The place is no-frills, so don’t expect diva treatment. H’wag mag-inarte! Eat like no one’s watching. So, we decided to taste ALL of their offerings in one sitting.
My favorite has to be the Kalderetang Kambing (goat meat stewed in tomato sauce), simply because it is the most common way a goat is cooked. I like how it is quite sweet and creamy.
A cup of rice with a sampling of Sinampalukang Kambing (goat meat in tamarind soup) which was aromatic. Loved that the soup was thick yet not so greasy.
Kinilaw na Kambing. At first look, I thought it was sisig without the sizzling plate! Chewy and exotic! It actually doesn’t have that “goat smell” but if you want to be sure there will be no after-taste, then eat it with “kalamansi”.
Papaitan na Kambing (bitter seasoned goat-innards stew) looked nauseating at first, but I tried it and it was okay. Not really a fan of bitter food. (ehem, ampalaya, ewww!)
Another popular way of cooking the kambing (goat) is through the Filipino favorite, adobo-style! KeikoKen’s version was pleasing enough.
Finally, for those who chicken out in trying the goat dishes, here’s a safe choice: Native Chicken Tinola. Due to their nature, native chicken is usually tastier and more savory but sometimes they’re tougher perhaps because they are free to roam around, their muscles get exercised more. LOL.
After the halo-halo of goat dishes, we flushed them down with our all-time favorite drink, Coke!
For everything that we feasted on above, we spent a little more than a hundred pesos only per person! Really affordable considering that we had six different dishes.
They say (and I agree) that when you’re out of town, you should NEVER dine in a fastfood joint! But instead, eat how the locals do. And KeikoKen Kambingan is already popular among the locals, so much that if you go for late lunch, everything must have been already consumed.
