Part 15 of a series
DAY 3

9:24am. Just on the foot of Vigia de Nagparitan where the Cape Bojeador Lighthouse stands, one can find this soul-shaking sight: mighty waves whipping the rocky shores of Burgos, Ilocos Norte. If only it was white sand instead of prickly rocks, then this might have been an instant tourist destination. But hey, I’m not complaining. I love it as it is. Natural. Untouched. Beautiful.

I do not know if these huts are government initiatives. LOL.

After our visit to the Cape Bojeador Lighthouse, we advanced further northeast to conquer the northernmost point of the Island of Luzon!

At 9:39am, we entered the town of Bangui, Ilocos Norte, the land of the mighty windmills

Bangui Ilocos Norte
The town hall of Bangui. Bangui is a 4th class muncipality in Ilocos Norte. The town has its own festival, the Kannawidan Festival, which is a five day celebration starting on April 26 of every year. Townsfolk look forward to the festival as it is the biggest event in Bangui for them to showcase their practices, tradition and culture.

9:42am. We arrived at the Bangui Viewdeck Restaurant, one of the popular destinations when one wants to view the windmills from afar. (Unfortunately, because of time constraints, we weren’t able to view the windmills up close but anyway, that’s just another reason for me to return. I SHALL RETURN!)

Bangui Ilocos Norte
The Bangui Wind Mills were built by the NorthWind Power Development Corporation to take its share in reducing the emission of harmful greenhouse gases (GHGs) causing global warming and to accelerate the rural electrification of the goverment.

In this area, wind mostly comes from the north-east, from the sea towards the land. To optimize the full benefit of the winds, turbines are installed along the shore facing the sea effectively removing wind breaks.

The ‘Wind Farm” as it is aptly called consist of 15 wind turbines. The turbines are on-shore and arranged in a single row spaced 326 meters apart. The turbines hub height (ground level to center of nacelle – that part holding the blades) is 70 meters high (roughly equivalent to a 23 storey building), each blade is 41 meters long (just 9 meters shy of a Olympic sized pool).

And finally, here is a panorama of the Bangui Windmills and its environs. Click on the photo for a larger version.
