DAY 2

10:35am. From the shrine of Our Lady of Manaoag in Manaoag, Pangasinan, we just followed the one and only major road, Milo Street and headed northwest to the next town: San Jacinto, Pangasinan. From there, Milo St. was simply referred to as National Road. We headed further west to the next town: Mangaldan, Pangasinan. At the town’s only major intersection, we then turned right to Quezon Highway or otherwise known as the Pangasinan-La Union Interprovincial Road or simply “The North Luzon Loop Road”

San Fabian, Pangasinan

Before one could reach Agoo, La Union, one would still have to pass by two more towns: San Fabian, Pangasinan and Santo Tomas, La Union. On the La Union side, the Quezon Highway is called the MacArthur Highway. I can’t understand why street names are affected by provincial boundaries. It simply doesn’t make sense. Only in the Philippines will one encounter confusion about street names!

Santo Tomas, La Union
The South China Sea could be seen from the San Fabian-Santo Tomas section of the Quezon Highway

Our first stopover in the province of La Union, known as the surfing capital of the north, was at the Basilica of Our Lady of Charity in Agoo, La Union. The church is located just beside the MacArthur Highway and across the town plaza so it is not at all difficult to locate.

11:05am.

Agoo Church La Union

Agoo Church La Union

The Basilica, which was built in 1892 after a severe earthquake, is probably the most beautiful church in La Union. It has a Shrine of Our Lady and is the most important place of pilgrimage in the province during Holy Week.

The church is indeed very beautiful. In fact, it is one of the most beautiful churches I’ve been to. No wonder why a lot of couples choose the Basilica as the venue for them to hold their solemn wedding ceremonies.

  1. From Perla Q. Fontilla:

Does the Agoo town plaza still have two stages at both ends of the plaza used for public dances in the past?
